My PC presents me with the BIOS screen and will not load windows automatically.?

I'm running Windows 8.1. When I started my computer 4 days ago, I saw that many music files on my desktop had disappeared. I thought I must have deletec them by accident.

The following day when I turned by PC on, it stopped at the BIOS screen as if it didn't know which of the drives had the Windows.I had to manually point BIOS to the hard and the PC worked normally after that. The same thing happened the following day. It has been doing this ever since (for 4 days now). I decided to do a fresh installation of Wndows (8.1) but that did not stop the BIOS screen appearing again. I have since re-installed Windows (8.1) no less than 3x to no avail.

Furthermore, whereas the other times I freshly reinstalled Windows I had to install literally dozens of updates, this time no updates appear. It is as if somebody messed up my PC and it wil not longer reeceive updates.. Without updates my PC is doomed to attack etc. It is as if someone looked into my PC and disabled Windows or disabled something in Windows.

Please help. I know how to install windows but this time it's different. Finally and I don't know if this is related to the other problem, the PC does not remember the date and time I set it to. It revers to midnigh alwaqys.

Do you think my PC was hacked into and that somebody changed some setting on my PC/BIOS ? Has that person disabled my windows? Please help. I will be very thankful for any help or instructions on what I must do to put the PC right again.

Update:

Thank you all so very much ! So many goods answers. I awarded the 10 pts to the person who gave me the earliest answer. Thank you all again.

As "Chris" says - it needs a new battery on the motherboard.

They are usually a 2032 size lithium coin cell.

The time & date setting being lost is probably the reason for updates not working. It must be set accurately for various things to work as they should.

sounds like your cmos battery is flat. if it has not been replaced for 2-3 years, replace it. Clear the CMOS and then your pc should be ok. your keyboard could be suspect.

It all sounds terribly frastrating, but the most likely cause for all of this is a flat BIOS battery. There's a small button battery that resides on the motherboard which powers the BIOS chip and thus helps retain the settings stored on it. If the battery runs flat then all that information is lost. the end result is what you see each time you shut down and start back up. Replace the battery and apply your settings and preferences one more time. Test by rebooting and you'll find the PC will remember the settings.

    the CMOS battery is dead.

try leaving the computer on for 24 hours,

    sometimes they recharge a bit.

    if that does not work,

then you will have to replace the CMOS battery.

The standard lifetime of a CMOS battery is around 10 Years.

Well I would change first the BIOS battery. If you get it going install all your hardware drivers. If it works run a good anti-virus app. That's all I can think of.
