Try pushing it in for 5 seconds and see if it ejects.

If not, try shifting the transmission in and out of park (assuming it's an automatic) or put it into neutral (if it is a manual).

Engage the emergency brake (or if it is engaged, disengage and reengage it).

Good luck, I would have to get rid of that p.o.s. and install a remote and/or pushbutton start.

Start the motor back up and move the shift lever back and forth all the way several times. The shut the car off and try removing the FOB again.

FYI, this car has a really goofy key chip fob that loads like a motorized CD into a slot in the dash panel.

I don't know the fix, my mom had hers towed to the dealer to get it fixed under her extended warranty.

Good luck with it, those Swedish cars are a nightmare to work on and now not even made anymore.

Volvo has sold out the car division to the orient and now is concentrating on the heavy diesel market.

I can tell you this, my moms V80 needed a new timing chain @ 145K miles, that was a $2.8K repair.

When that happens on Mercedes cars it’s normally because the driver has forgotten to shift the transmission into neutral (and in a few countries where the law requires it, to apply the emergency brake).

The other cause is that the driver has done those things but the transmission interlock switch has failed.

Don’t force the key/fob out of the holder by brute force as you’ll turn one fault into a far more expensive pair of faults as that can ruin the ignition switch which then must be replaced along with all keys/fobs and all need to then be programmed to work together with the car.

If the interlock has failed then call a mechanic or automotive electrician out to your car for the switch to be replaced or get the car towed to a workshop.

Wiggle the steering wheel while trying to remove key.
