Why isn't the world cup this year receiving as much attention as last year?

Part of the difference is due to sociological factors. Women playing sports is still frowned upon outside of North America and parts of Europe. Consequently, the women's game generates very little enthusiasm in many areas which keenly support men's soccer.

Women's world cup and men's world cup. Two completely different competitions. The men's world cup has a audience of 3 or 4 billion world wide. The women's world cup has nowhere near that.

Because things change year to year. Maybe they didn't advertise as much. Maybe people aren't as interested.

Because last year it was the men's world cup and this year it is the women's. Unfortunately it is subject to the law of supply and demand and the men's game is far more popular so it doesn't make sense to give it the same kind of coverage from a financial point of view. However, the women's game is increasing in popularity so you may find that in subsequent tournaments the level of interest and therefore the coverage are also on the rise.

This year, it's the WOMEN's world cup, which doesn't attract as much media attention.
