an old friend told me he retired, i used to like him in his old germany world cup/euro cup -playing days, i thought he was a pretty good player.

No, he is still an Arsenal player, but not getting selected, because his style of play does not fit in with the current system. While he is being payed £500 per WEEK, he is happy to see out the last year of his contract.
