Panic ! Please help !!?

I had some problem with my PC and Windows 8.1 and had to re-install Windows 8.1 again. With the help of some nice Yahoo Answers members I got the PC to work again but I expected the usual 20 or 30 updates waiting for me as happened in the last year or two whenever I had to re-install Windows. This time nothing. I am a bit worried because I did have on my desktop 3 or 4 music files given to me by a friend and I believe they were pirated. A few days ago I found those music files deleted (not by me) and now I cannot get Windows to receive updates. Does anybody know why this is ? Have Microsoft disabled my Windows because they found and deleted some pirated songs from my desktop ? Why not the usual avalanche of updates that normally follows a fresh windows re-installation ? I am really worried that I cannot update my PC. Please help and advise. Thank you very much.

they would not do that. provided you installed your OS the SAME WAY you did before eg it came with that version originally or it came with w7 so you installed w7 and then did the upgrade to 8.1 then you are ok. if you right click my_computer and choose properties you should see the OS is listed as ACTIVATED. This is because the activation key is saved as part of the BIOS and it is recorded on the microsoft site so it can confirm that your hardware has not changed(a change of Hard disk is allowed). as for files being deleted, this is often MALWARE which affects the DESKTOP which is Vulnerable to malware, where each file has a HIDDEN attribute which gets set by the malware. all you need to do is UNHIDE each file. That can be done using a Dos Box(run cmd.exe) command just so you know. If your OS is NOT activated then you did not install it the same route it was as before or its a different copy of the OS(not same licence).

If you formatted your hard drive and did a fresh install then you'd need the eternal update thing. If you left your drive intact but somehow just refreshed the OS - even if you erased it and installed Win7 and then back again - the updates are residing on your hardrive with markers as to what they are. You just need to know where to look if you want to find them. You CAN delete the updates in control panel but most people don't, so they just sit there.

legally and technically Microsoft cant scan for pirated files.

if you recreated an install device for windows 8.1 then it would have installed all the updates on that OS up to that time.

if they were deleted is likely either you deleted them on accident or they had a virus in them and windows defender deleted them.
