I wouldn't use Safe Mode indefinitely.

If you have recovery disks, I'd suggest saving a back up on optical disks or an external hard drive - then do a clean install on a new hard drive & using the back up to get your other programs & such on the new hard drive.

If you don't have recovery disks, get a larger hard drive & clone it using Easus Partition Manager (free for home users) - it will let you clone to a hard drive of the same size or larger.

If you don't have recovery disks - you can get them (used) off eBay - match the operating system to the sticker with activation code on the bottom of the laptop. Since XP is about to quit being updated - you might want to think about going to the Linux side - smaller operating image leaves more space available for storage on the same sized hard drive - but you will need a new hard drive sooner or later.

A Vista upgrade to apply over XP might be cheaper and add some lifespan to the existing computer if you are tied to the Microsoft operating systems due to work, school, or other programs already purchased for the computer to run.

Source(s): Did this myself - recovery disks (used) off eBay and then cloned the hard drive (with my programs installed) to a larger one when I had more money. Also upgraded to a 7200 rpm hard drive instead of 5400 rpm & maxed out the RAM.

That stop error code is usually indicative of a failing hard drive. You should back up your computer, and install a new hard drive, reinstall windows, and restore from the backup.
