Choose a printer flexible enough to handle many types and sizes of photo paper, especially the kinds you plan to use often.

Brothers is good company,makes very reliable printers.

know your price range. then know what features you want: copier, fax, auto duplex, wifi/LAN, etc.

find one that does what you need in your price range.

Spock is correct. Unless you really do need colour a laser printer is by far the best choice. Laser printing is cheaper per page than inkjet without the reliability problems of clogging. In time inkjets clog up and can't be cleaned. With lasers they go on and on and on printing perfectly. I bought a cheap HP laser printer about ten years ago and it still prints like it came out of the shop.

laser printers are cheaper in the long run and the pages don't smear.  No reason to buy expensive brand -- the $50 [US] Brother or Samsung one is good enough for most home uses.  -- grampa

First determine what you are going to use it for. If you just want to print out something once in a while then a cheaper one that does color would be good. If you plan to do a lot of heavy printing such as photos and such then look at some more expensive models and ones that are made for photos. If you want an all in one which many don't as they do fax, black and color printing, photographs, and print on both sides of the paper. Any one that you may get, the printer will be the cheapest part as the ink cartridges is where they make their money. And if you decide to try using the refilled cartridges be careful as a lot of printers have been ruined by them as they tend to leak.
