This is NOT a GM CAR>>>It is a TOYOTA MATRIX with a GM label on it! The RIGHT oil is PENNZOIL ULTRA PLATINUM that gives a 500,000 mil OIL WARRANTY! if you use it, the engine will CLEAN UP as you drive it As the PENNZOIL Is made from NATURAL GAS and NTO from crude oil! NEVER USE VALVOLINE a DELETED and inferior oil made from ASH and WAX!>>>for best results>>>Remove the AC Delco JUNK PLUGS AND INSTALL a SET OF Denso twin tip iridium laser plugs! There is SO MUCH More power hiding in that great TOYOTA ENGINE that will come out when you install the IRIDIUM LASER PLUGS it turns into a RACE CAR! For even BETTER results, remove the VALVE COVER and clean it with AMSOIL POWER FOAM and use the AMSOIL FOAM to clan the THROTTLE BODY a nd the IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE! It is VERY SIMPLE! CLEAN the engine INSIDE and clean the engine OUTSIDE with GUNK ORANGE ORIGINAL engine cleaner! A CLEAN engine will dissipate HEAT naturally more EVEN and give EXTRA LIFE! The PENNZOIL and LASER PLUGs will protect the converter and the O2 sensors from corrupting early! The VIBE is a GREAT CAR and you can make it GREAT with these simple changes! AC DELCO Plugs do NOT pass plug tests and are OLD TECHNOLOGY made in MEXICO to save GM some money on parts! THEY MAKE THEM THERE! OIl from PENNZOIL should be a "0" series oil like 0W-20. or 0W-30; whichever is closest to the numbers on the oil cap! PENNZOIL is unique in that it is made from NATURAL GAS and not CRUDE and has a 500,000 mile extended engine warranty I have gotten FORU PEOPLE new or NEWER engines from CASTROL, CADDY and GM for this one single item! GOOD LUCK and change the oil every SIX MONTHS to ONE YEAR with the PENNZOIL and KEEP THE RECEIPTS! Should you have ENGINE WOES they can TEST the oil to see if you really used the PENNZOIL product!

The vast majority of GM cars of that time period took a synthetic blend 5w-30 type of oil,and I believe your car takes about 4.5 quarts, but you ought to check your owners manual to be absolutely sure. If you don't have it in your glove box, you should be able to find a PDF of it online.

No doubt good old 5W30. Might want to use some high mileage motor oil like Valvoline Maxlife or similar brand. Conventional, semi-synthetic, or full synthetic.

Car is old.  Do not waste any more money.  Put the cheapest API SN 5W-30 oil with an API donut seal that you can find.

SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil. Or 5w-40 if the climate is very hot.
