Actually, it is a mistranslation. They don't get 72 Virgins, they actually get ONE 72 year old virgin.

Firstly the idea behind 72 virgins isn't real

It was made up to get young men to join armies to fight battles

In Islam it says that everyone will be a virgin and that they will have a virgin partner

Nothing in the Quran mentions the number of how many virgins someone gets

If you are a straight male and they are male as well I can only see it as punishment. Then again teaching the opposite sex about the act itself can be a punishment at times as well.
