It helps the environment and your budget. Years back I managed an apartment complex. There were several people who complained that their ACs weren't working properly. They were mostly from NYC where the power company told them to conserve electricity and turn their AC off during the day while they were at work. They would come home and turn on their AC and expect immediate results. AC does not work that way. Before you get the true affects from AC you have to reduce the humidity plus cool down the walls, furniture and other heat sinks you may have. All this while the AC is struggling to keep up. In NYC they were known to have brownouts during that time of the day. Well no wonder since about 5 o'clock everyone got home and turned on their air conditioners at the same time. This in turn reduced the voltage in the areas. ACs, as many other electrical devices, are extremely dependent on Watts. So as the Voltage goes down the Amperage has to increase to maintain the Wattage. (Also, since you are metered in Amperes but charged in Watts you are not getting your monies worth during these times.) Another factor, this low voltage causes damage to your electrical appliances since they are engineered to run at above 110 VAC and if your 110 goes to 105 Volts real damage is caused. (Actually optimum is around 118 volts and double that for ACs since mostly they run on 220 to 240 volts) I told one person to leave her AC on and I personally would pay the extra money. I never had to pay anything since her electric bill went down.

Leave your AC on and save money. When your AC is sized it is sized to maintain not recover.

It does effect the environment, logic is once ac function when the occupant is there or not in particular room, one can enjoy the comfort of ac but what about outside. As you would be aware ac runs with gas as well. Whether you believe it or not that disturb an environment into the thin air and in other word it effect the Global Warming as well.

Running your AC consumes power, and your electric bill is a good measure of how much. The environmental effect depends on the source of the power. If your utility co. gets its power from burning fossil fuel the CO2 from burning the fuel will contribute to global warming. Other power sources have their own effects - hydropower means you have modified how a river operates, nuclear means you have to deal with fuel disposal, wind means caring about bird kills, etc. etc.. Installing electrical transmission lines has an environmental effect. Being specific means knowing where your power comes from and how it gets to you, then going into details of the process.

All the AC does is move heat from one place to the other. So the overall effect is nil.
