Here are answers to five common questions women have about their periods:

    1. Can I swim during my period?

Swimming during your period is not advisable as it is not hygienic. Chlorine water may cause infections.

    2. Why do I get moody around my period?

This is called the Pre-Menstrual Syndrome(PMS). Your body experiences hormonal imbalances making you feel tired, tensed and depressed. You will feel bloated and may even have a headache or nausea.

"These symptoms usually occur a few days before your period. They do not last for more than 2-3 days," says Dr Singh.

    3. Is it normal to have irregular periods?

Our daily schedules include a lot of stress. "Work, worries at home, relationships, financial problems all create havoc on your hormones, causing ups and downs in your period. A few days are normal," says Dr Singh.

However, if this happens often or if you skip your period altogether, you should consult a doctor.

    4. What is this white discharge?

The white discharge is mucus secreted during ovulation. It is common to see this before, during or after your period.

"If the discharge has a foul odour or causes your vagina to itch, then it is a cause for concern. You may have a minor infection," says Dr Singh.

    5. Can I exercise during my periods?

In fact, doctors recommend mild exercise during your period. "A good exercise regime makes the menstrual cycle regular," says Dr Singh. If you have heavy periods or cannot handle exercise with menstrual cramps, take a day off.

Listen to your body, it will tell you what it is comfortable with.

The best person to talk to about your menstrual cycle is a gynaecologist. Consult one today for any other nagging doubts you may have. And if you still feel shy to open up, you can also ask our gyneac expert in complete anonymity. Do not keep yourself in the dark. After all, it is your body.
