Dell Dimension 2400 screen goes blank?

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 i am trying to get up and running for a 2nd PC for the kids. The problem is that after like 5-10 minutes the screen turns blank? The diagnostic lights on the back of the PC are all green when it turns on but when the screen goes out the lights go all off (no color). And the power button light on the front of the PC turns and stays orange/amber (It is green before the monitor goes blank).

Now after the lights go out on the back and there is no screen on, the power supply fan is still turning and so is the heat fan or whatever you wanna call it on the back of the tower.

Is this the power supply that went kaboom? any ideas would help alot....thanks!

Update:

the motherboard's light is on and green

Update 2:

i dont think its hibernation cause it goes out while trying to do things, etc. it just goes blank no matter what. i seriously doubt its cause the PC is not being used. seems to be like a hardware failure like maybe the power supply or the on board graphics maybe?

i dont have the original resource disk or windows xp (sp3) disk. i want to get this up and running and add RAM and then clean install windows 7 (hopefully). but i need the monitor to stay ON..lol.

It appears your hibernation feature is turned on. This is in control panel, been a while since I have done anything with XP. Dell says this: Steady Amber power light. Ensure the 20 pin cable is plugged in the motherboard properly.Remove and reinstall memory modules. Check all cable connections.

If your computer is as was from Dell, Press F-12 at start up when the Dell logo appears. This will start Dell Diagnostics located on your hard drive. You will want to highlight 'Boot to utility Partition in the next frame of choices. The Diagnostic Main menu will appear now, choose the test you want to perform. Or you can do the same from the Resource CD that was provided as new. I still have mine, you?

The bad news. With the age of your computer, a component could be starting to expire. You can see if event viewer in Administrative tools shows errors related to your problem. You will want to look under the hardware tab once opened. Hope it helps.

Most of the time that happens, it's because the processor is overheating. Sometimes, it's because the cpu fan has failed, others, it's because the cpu fan is so full of dust, that it can't start spinning. Of course, it could also be that your power supply is failing. If it is failing, you'll HAVE to buy a new one through Dell, because the cheaper Dell power supplies are proprietary.

Try pressing the NUM LOCK key does it responds, remove the Ram clean the golden plates using the eraser and put it back remove each wires attached to the motherboard and attach it again. Clear the Bios and load default values.

sounds more like ur whole computers gone "kaboom". never even heard of a power on light turning orrange on a pc, usualy happens on xbox 360. check and see if your motherboard has a light on it still, if not then youve got that to replace. might as well buy new computer how much motherboard cost to replace.
