Lifespan of a lipstick/lip gloss?

They say life span of a lipstick or a lip gloss is 18 months.

http://www.bellasugar.com/When-throw-makeup-away-g...

But I have lipsticks & lip glosses which were bought 4-5 years ago but barely used & do not smell funky, feeling gooey or anything odd..

Should I toss them away? :-??

P.S :-

I had oddly (kind of oily) smelling lipsticks, some eye shadow & blush palettes with molds & some kind of fungus in them in the bottom of my drawers.

So I get rid of them. =(

Update:

They haven't change the colours or smell odd but it's better to throw them away right...? :-??

I wasn't much into heavy makeup up until recently..

so most of the stuff I own are about 6 months old at most :)

Phew..I guess I have some time to finish them off...

& yep I throw mascara away every 3 months. But the foundation, concealer, powder & my clear gloss finishes off in a time less than a year.. so there's nothing left to throw away...lol

Update 2:

I don't think lip glosses expire after 2 months...then it would be kind of ridiculous to buy a $20 lip gloss to throw away in 2 months which definitely will be barely used by anyone other than a makeup artist.

Update 3:

No one will be throwing away their blushers & eye shadows in a 6 months of time..

I mean cummon...make up costs a fortune & you are gonna throw them away barely used?

I get rid of the liquid liners (6-8 months)& mascara(3-4 months)...but to others..noway...

& pencil liners don't work for me....Iol...I end up sharpening them & poof they goes within 6 months! =D

Update 4:

Hmmm...according to Rhonda...

since I practise a healthy mechanism when I use makeup...like keep them in a separate closet in my room, wash myself before makeover, always use brushes, clean brushes after each use...etc

& no one is coming ours to share my makeup..lol...I think my dry makeup will definitely last for good old 2 years.......

Update 5:

I have separate makeup products & traveling brushes for on the go usage except lipstick / lip gloss though :-s

Cuz I find them get dirty & oily quickly.. specially the compacts...ewww...

I wipe off my lips with a wet tissue before every time I have to re-apply the lipstick/gloss. But I don't think that's sanitary enough.. :-s

Does anyone have any tips & tricks to share when it comes to re-apply lip glosses/ lip sticks without getting their brushes to touch your lips & poke it again into the tube?

I tried using a Q-tip to apply them...gloss came fine...but the lipstick application was quite messy.. :-<

So I bought sample sized lipsticks of some colours I have [ they didn't had all x-( ]...

So what can I do about the other colours? :-s

Do you have cosmetics in a drawer that you have owned forever? Can you remember when you last bought mascara? Using old or expired cosmetics can lead to bacterial infections and other health problems. Over time, cosmetics develop yeast, fungi, and bacteria growth on their surface. These are transferred to your skin anytime you apply your makeup. This guide will help you to determine how long to keep each piece of your cosmetic collection.

Foundation:This product usually only lasts a year. It is probably one of the ones you replace most often, since many people use it daily. If you notice any changes in color or consistency before a year, throw the remainder away.

Lipstick:This product is one of the longest lasting ones. Most lipsticks will last two or three years before they need to be replaced. A sure sign that you have had your lipstick too long is when it starts to smell bad.

Mascara:This product needs to be replaced every three to six months. Since it is applied to one of the most sensitive areas of your face, it is important to make sure that it clean and sanitary.

Eye and Lip Pencils:Pencils easily last three years. The best way to ensure that they remain safe to apply is to keep them well sharpened and store them with the cap on.

Powder, Blush, and Eye Shadow Compacts: These products last for two to three years. Always use a brush instead of your fingers to apply them. If you notice a color change, then it is time to buy a new compact.

Nail Polish:This product lasts for about two years. Shake before applying to mix the pigment that has separated. If you find that shaking does fully mix the product, it is time to purchase a new bottle.

Never share your makeup with anyone else, since bacteria from their face is then transferred to yours. Use makeup brushes instead of your finger to apply makeup, since you finger has bacteria on it that can be transferred to both your face and the makeup container. Storing your makeup in a cool, dry place (not in the bathroom) will help them last longer. Finally, if you notice any differences in the way your cosmetics looks, smell, or feel replace them.

i dont think that site is accurate. good morning america had a section on when to throw away makeup. i believe after about 2 months most lip glosses expire, it gets a kinda sickening sweet smell and thats when i know to toss it. if you opened your lip glosses 4-5 years ago there is MAJOR bacteria growing in it, whether u can tell or not. PLS DO NOT USE IT.

you may not see the little buggies swimming, floating, walking around on old make-up, but they're there. spend the $5 on new lip gloss and save yourself a trip to the emergency room =)

you should not keep any makeup for more than 6 months at a time. especially eyeliners or mascaras because the longer you have them, the greater chance for you to get an eye infection. for lip glosses and lipsticks, you don't want to keep them any longer because the lip gloss/lipstick could get dust on/in it and if you put it no your lips then you could get an infection too. plus it could change the color.
