Why do we have a USAF?

The Army, Navy, and Marines won two world wars without them. It seems to me the USAF is just more paperwork / bureaucracy and is unnecessary.

Long range bombers can once again be the job of the army.

SSBNs can handle strategic nuclear deterrence

The age of the fighter plane is almost over

Update:

Air supremacy: SAMs and carrier based fighter/attack aircraft

Update 2:

Ok NEO, I'll give you that the roles of Army and USAF are too different. But as far as military strategy goes, I can tell you from my time in Iraq, we don't have one.

the navy has more aircraft than the af and the army more boats than the navy. the af is just a postal service-they get the personnel, the supplies, and the ordnance where we need it sent. everything they do can very easily be absorbed into the other branches.

naval aviators have historically been better than af pilots-and before you start talking about fighter killcounts remember that the AAC counted grounded birds, and that marine and naval squadrons rotated crews and changed designations often.

the air force is so big because it is needlessly bloated. yes it takes a ton of maintenance and manhours to keep those birds airborne but there are so many redundant and needless extensions of that branch.

as far as military discipline goes theyre severely lacking-from outright demanding the best living conditions and bitching incessantly that its never good enough to mollycoddling their servicemembers in case anyone is butthurt in the slightest-all to often they prove themselves to be a bunch of self-important and self-gratifying needy little whiners.

the bias in the air force to prefer pilots to everything is ridiculous-10% of officers fly anything other than a desk! youre pushing them and shoving the folks who keep that bloated monster running off to the side, to further a self-aggrandizing view of The Way Things Are(nt).

its sad, but if you spend any amount of time living amongst them youll see it. and there are too many good airmen out there who will never get the glamor or the glory the af hypes because theyre in positions that by their nature are unnoticed when theyre going smoothly.

Air supremacy is still critically essential for any ground war to be successful. You may want to familiarize yourself with military strategy before making your ridiculous statements. To this day, and for the foreseeable future, the fighter plane is the guarantor of air supremacy, and still operates heavily over Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere any conflict occur.

Naval Air, although great in every way, are limited by their location and the constant threat of attack. There are just so many aircraft carriers, but hundreds of Air Force bases that can launch at a moments notice.

The role of the Army and Air Force are too different to link them. That's why they were almost immediately separated after WW2.

Source(s): I genuinely thank you for your service. And I'm not commenting on our strategy after the war, but we did obtain our objective in Iraq in relative short order. Saddam was removed from power in less than 3 weeks. What happened later was political and piss-poor planning.

Except the problem is, the Navy only has 668 fighters.

So if you put the Air Force back in the Army.

Then you would have one branch of the Army with 40% of the personal in the Army.

Because it would still take the same number of people.

Thats why they split it off in the first place.

    It was so large.
