What are your thoughts on Linux?

This is more of a survey question -- I already am using Ubuntu.

Thank you for your input!

Linux is rather advance you can considered kernel version 2.6 above to be stable enough for production purposes

    Compare to Vista

    1) Allows multiple logins

    2) Better file system less fragmentation

    3) Allows better interoperability supports many file system read writes

4)Good for all purposes (i.e can be uses both as client and server depending on configuration unlike vista and Windows Server 2008 )

5)Free Open source ideal learning platform

6)Wide support many volunteers write drivers for Linux

7)All additional software available for free

Cons compared to all other OS out there

    1) Have to learn CLI to utilise full features

    2) Kernel maintained separately from software layer which may result in conflicts that are not solvable by end user

    3) Poor documentation compared to other OS

    4) Sometimes relies on crude workaround solutions to solve a problem which may result in messy code base

    5) Due to many different distro out there relearning maybe required during distro switch

  • Well...I've used Linux, Mac OS X 10.5.4 Leopard, Windows XP, Windows Me, and Windows Vista.

Linux is a pretty solid OS (I used Ubuntu). It's very customizable, and as long as your computer can handle it, you can use compiz-fusion to make Linux do some pretty great things.

Another good thing about Linux is that almost all the applications written for it are open source and free.

There is one bad thing however. To install an application, or to install some things, you HAVE to know a lot of code. For people who don't want to learn code, then I wouldn't use Linux.

    Lug is correct.

    1st, Linux is FREE>

No cash, no F8-yes, I agree to whatever terms a vendor places upon me and the system.

Linux is secure. Linux is stable. Linux offers diverse distributions focused upon whatever your main goal is in the use of a system.

Linux is a choice, an option when vendors want to reduce options and tie you into using ONLY what they offer. Linux is not as difficult as its painted to be. Yes, there are those who will experience problems. But there are remedies available. Despite being a heavy XP user, I insist that the majority of my machines run Linux. Like this one for example. Last weeks XP crash due to corrupted DLLs and a recovery are a thing of the past. After an hour repairing, I slipped PCLOS on it and was up and running in 30 minutes.

    Linux is technically advanced :

Linux is just so goddamn hard to learn, install, use and configure. Especially configure.

    Linux is highly configurable :

Nothing works right away. In order to make your Linux system work, you need to spend ten hours configuring every little piece of your system yourself before you can start using it.

    Linux is secure :

By default u r not allowed to do anything

The Linux community is there to help you

software installation and software dependencies - u have faced some diffficulty at the beginning

Before getting into the linux, know how is linux built and components of linux, especially learn about various linux distributions

Linux has altogether made my computing experience more enjoyable. I am in complete control as to what I run on PC, no longer tied down by proprietory software and into to the wonderful world of open source with no boundaries. No longer having to worry about Viruses and Spyware and having to run bloated Antivirus software. Linux offers the best an operating platform can, its just unfortunate that more people do not realize it.

I really hate Linux. Kubuntu looks better ... still, -Nothing compares to Windows Vista Ultimate.
