What I disliked the most about Japan was territorial competition from other foreigners to be the "true" person of culture. Always trying to 1-up you in where to go, what to eat, how to pronounce etc.

There is good and bad everywhere you go, and Japan is no exception. But there is much more good than bad there.
One thing that is very hard to take is the brutal muggy humidity and the rainy season that comes over the country like a thick blanket from June until autumn. Unless you go way up north or into the high mountains, it can make your brain melt. Last time I was passing through Tokyo it was rain or about to rain over 80% of the time.
Yes, there are worse places like down by the equator, but it is still very exhausting and despite drinking 3 liters of water all through the day, by the evening I was still dehydrated.
Aside from that, the "no photos allowed" garbage at so many museums and temples is a big annoyance, but if you don't shoot a lot then it won't matter to you much.

they're xenophobic and they don't like black people. they also have this fear/loathing about the West probably because of Hiroshima. it manifests in their anime with all the characters having round eyes.
