The Dugong (Dugong dugon) is herbivorous. It primarily eats seagrasses, particularly those which are low in fibre, high in nitrogen content and easily digestible. These are mainly from the plant families Potamogetonaceae and Hydrocharitaceae. They are known to eat marine algae if seagrasses are scarce.
