How come even the best citizens are screwed?

I was always highly intelligent and graduated

2nd in my class, with 20 Honors classes

(at the high school-level). Yet, that's not enough.

Companies want 10 Master's degrees these days,

plus the ability to speak 5 languages

and 20 years experience. Your thoughts?

A competitive labor market raises the ante. There was a cartoon years ago where a man dressed as a chef is being interviewed, and the personnel guy asks him if he can type 50 words a minute! In France, the law makes it very hard to fire anyone, so even an "entry level" job requires experience and a gold-plated resumé.
