Do some companies have a business model where they view entry level employees as just people they can replace?

Where I work, my manager has about 20 years of experience. No one else is really even close to his level of knowledge. I've seen about half of my teammates leave. I feel like my company doesn't even care really. Since it seems like the manager acts like he can just do half of the work anyway. For example, he'll resolve a bunch of issues and then not explain what he did.

Entry level employees are expendable because they know very little about the way the company works and can be replaced with little or no training.  The higher the level of the employee...the more experience and/or specialized training they have and the hard it is to replace them....  Learn what your manager does and you will have his job when he retires.

Generally speaking ... ALL employees are expendable.  If it ever gets to the point where a business...even if it is making money...has a lot of employee related problems... then the owners will either close or sell the business without consulting any of the employees ...and usually not even the management.

Therefore it is always good to LEARN everything you can about the business.

    Why?

If the Manager who KNOWS it all after 20 years...suddenly has a stroke and is unable to work...someone is going to be expected to step in and take over.  That SOMEONE might as well be you.

You should ALWAYS make certain that...in any job you undertake where you have a boss...you must be the first to be hired and the last to be let go.  ALWAYS.

  • Any one can be replaced. Doesn't matter how much experience they have if they make a big mistake or if they get reported for something like harassment, they can get fired. It's sad but some companies don't care that much about their employees.

I heard of some one that had 20 years of experience and they were fired. They found out that this person lied on a covid form and they were fired. Your manager doesn't have to explain what they've done, unless ask them to. He may feel like he can't get those things done right, if he doesn't do them himself.

No.  They are expecting that you work out and pass the probation period.

    Sure.

but also your manager might have the attitude that it's just easier if I do it myself.

If you are interested in learning more, talk to the manager about getting more knowledge about how the business works.
