Why it take so long to drive between cities in South Africa compared to Ireland?

    It’s easily possible to drive the entire length of Ireland between the most southerly and most northerly points in about 7h 30m.

    South Africa swallows Lesotho whole, and The Republic of Ireland is only about twice the size of Lesotho. 

    In addition, Ireland has a much better road system: driving the length of it would all be on hardtop roads. Roads between towns and cities in South Africa can just be compacted soil in the dry season.
