Why did US not want NATO dissolved after the Cold War, if they are paying for NATO most out of all members ?

NATO has degenerated into Americans paying for the defense of countries in Europe.  None of the European countries pay their agreed share for NATO and none ever have.  Even England turned coward and did not honor their treaty commitment in Vietnam.  Nothing in Europe  is worth the life of one American.  Get out.  Come home.

Because NATO is still important. It's in US and European interests to have an alliance.

The same reason that, when the USSR collapsed, neither H.W. Bush nor Clinton did a "Marshall Plan" for the post-Soviets (as thousands starved in the economic collapse).

The purpose of NATO is not to serve as the West's "shield" against evil totalitarianism or the sword which defends the olive branch of Democracy in foreign nations.

The purpose of NATO is to exert power and feed the military contractors. And no country has a bigger military-industrial-complex than the United States (you're probably already aware, but check out President Eisenhower's speech, Maj. General Smedley Butler's book "War is a Racket", and Nick Turse's "The Complex").

In fact, NATO has gotten bigger since the end of the Warsaw Pact and, barring - illegal and destructive - Russian interference in Ukraine, NATO's border would have moved to within 600km of Moscow. Furthermore, contrary to expectation, while spending as a portion of GDP has trended down (going up and Bush and Trump, down under Obama as a percentage of GDP), overall spending only seems to go up, even as more countries join the alliance.

As for the general question of why military spending isn't shrinking faster, or the US isn't leaving Europe to defend itself as it very well could do, to cite "King Cheat-oo", the people making these decisions aren't the one's paying for the military spending.

Trump got other countries to pay their fair share. But will Biden be strong enough to keep them paying?

Military spending is a big part of the us economy and the people making the decision aren't actually paying for it.

It's all about CONTROL...Governments don't care about the cost of anything as long as there are taxpayers to rob at will.

It is still a strong, multinational military force for things like terrorism.
