Is the Land Rover discovery reliable?

I have heard the model year 1997 and anything before is good. Is this true? How did Land Rover go from conquering the Outback and Savannah to the modern mechanical nightmare people complain about today?

No luxury vehicle is reliable that's why only the rich can afford to drive them

They are reliable as being found abandoned in the forests. Obviously broken...not worth towing out.

.Advertising and what they Hoped the vehicles could do to REALITY and the nearest junk yard.

Land Rovers aren't reliable to begin with, but the Discovery - especially that generation- was utter garbage. In fact, anything Rover is garbage. I was told they used a reject Buick engine. It was so bad Buick didn't even want to use it. Not sure how true that is but I've heard that from several mechanics and techs.

If any English car starts twice in 1 week it's considered dependable.
