Can a landlord verify tax return documents ?

So lets say I apply for new apartment and the landlord wants tax return to verify proof of income. Can they call Canada revenue to verify? Will Canada revenue or tax return office disclose how much that person made that year? Or would that be deemed privacy breach?

Of course not........... But lying is a good way to get an apartment you can't afford.

No they can't do that by phone.

But they can require you to sign an authorization allowing transcripts of your tax returns to be sent to them.

That's standard practice in mortgage lending but it's not commonly done in rental situations as it takes too long for the documents to arrive.
