Why does the price of a pair of shoes not vary based on size?

Expensive leather boots, for example, cost the same whether it's a size 8 or a size 13, even though a size 13 uses almost twice the material and stitches.

Well, in the first place and especially with boots, material is not anywhere near twice as much. It isn't a shirt. Second stitches would be measured by man hours and not by cost of an extra twelve inches of thread. It takes approximately the same number of man-hours to build a pair of size 13 shoes as it does a pair of size 8 shoes. Material is the least of it so when they figure the unit cost leather and thread just go in the mix as construction costs.

There is nothing preventing suppliers from pricing the same model of shoe differently according to size. So we can assume that the supplier generates higher profit with a pricing model that doesn't differentiate on size. It may be that the additional administrative overhead associated with more complex pricing is not outweighed by enough net additional profit.

One possible approach is to set the price such that an equal number of people benefit by getting a larger shoe as do those that are paying more for a shoe than the actual cost plus a pro-rata share of the profit.

Because the people making shoes want to still make good money, thus they charge the same amount for shoes that take nearly half the resources. Plus, time and labor doesn't usually differ, only size and materials used.

Shoes are price elastic. The same price for all sizes would be a low price strategies, but attract more quantity demand. How about the same shoes for the hole family?

They do. Also what material is used, how you wish them stitched, what buckles or straps used. What sole is used is a big cost also the leather. If it is back or side leather how tanned and how soft what liner it all adds up at my cobbler before he even starts to make a shoe for you.

Clothing is the same way. Unfair isn't it? Smaller and physically fit people have to pay more to clothe larger and obese people. There are lots of lame excuses manufacturers use, but none add up to me. If I want a larger tent I have to pay more than a small tent.

    Pisses me off!!!!
