Are calculators used in sixth form?

Hello

I will be joining sixth form, this September. Could you please tell me if calculators are used in the science subjects. I have taken physics, chemistry, maths and further maths.

Thanks a lot!!

Absolutely! You'll need a proper scientific one, like this:

    Good luck!

You will certainly need a Scientific Calculator, but don't go overboard with the price - there are several excellent ones about £10 or even less. There is one point of difficulty - you may be advised to get a graphic calculator, which are a lot more expensive. I personally would advise against doing so - I feel that too many pupils rely on them too much instead of thinking - they are totally unnecessary, and using them so much prevents a pupil from developing a feel for the behaviour of the graphs of functions. You will see what I mean if you ask some pupils "What is 8 times 15 ?" and they immediately reach for a calculator, whereas thinking for a (very) few seconds will give you the answer almost immediately - faster, in fact, than you can do it on a calculator !
