Race in Skyrim is based mostly on how you like to look.

-Each race has different bonuses that can affect "game-play' initially

-Race also affects NPC reactions (Unless you are wearing an amulet of Mara; and the NPC is marriage eligible).

-Once your character builds in Level; it dosen't really matter.

Some of the other answers provide a lot of detail; but don't really address your question. The reason is Skyrim gives you the ability to play it your way.

Therefore "Pick" the Race you feel suits you (looks you like) if you can't make up your mind take the options at the beginning and get your feet wet. Just have fun and if you don't like it start again.

My main character is a Redguard Archer/Ranger 86 Level (Legendary), because I like using 2 handed weapons "initially" most often I use my Dragonbone Bow both have a tactical advantage. Shoot enemies at a distance and when the get to close pull out the big sword.

    Ultimately,

    1. Nord, (lots of enemies with cold skills, you take half damage as Nord.

    Crowd control skill

    2. Dumner (half damage from fire enemies, you might actually be able to enjoy being a vampire)

    3. Altner: No elemental protection, but lots of magical and melee firepower.

    4. Argonian: The lizard makes the fourth spot not just for looks nor for water-breathing, but the fact that

you can tank any one enemy per oblivion day, the healing power especially when combined with soup

allow you to "take out" any one. Perhaps a better assassin then meets the eye. Also a better thief,

so two guilds are made easier (The Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild). Also if you hate being a

vampire, or contracting any other disesase, this is your lizard.

    5. The Orc, not a thief, but a horder and tank. Better at dealing with multiple ennemies, once per oblivion

day and will kill enemies twice as fast as argonian again once per day. Beware of the Orc/Mage.

Though the Altmer is more powerful, there's something satisfying with melee kills. Throwing a fire ball

gets boring, requires the least tactics while an ORC or Nord will be more fun, you just have to choose

between Defensive (Nord) vs Offensive (Orc).

Breton is the best race for everything.

    1. The racial power Dragonskin : Absorb 50% of magicka from hostile spells for 60 seconds. Is great when fighting mage's and dragons.

2.Magic Resistance : Breton blood grants a 25% resistance to magic.

With the magic resistance racial it makes it very easy to cap magic resist as a breton (80%)

And you can get 50% at start of the game if you run over to the lord stone.

Other races need to enchant more gear for it then Breton for the cap so as a breton you can have other usefull enchants.

It's not a big deal unless you play on master/legendary but it's a huge help if you do.

Another good race that is a close second (Atleast for me.) Is the orc.

    1. Berserker Rage - Take half damage and do double damage for 60 seconds. This does not apply to damage dealt by spells; however, it does stack with other physical damage buffs. While Berserker Rage is active, the screen turns red and a little blurry while sound dulls a bit.

They do not have a permanent racial like Breton but with berserker rage it makes the very hard fight's in the game easy.

    Other then those 2

Nords have 50% frost resist and a power that fears evreything for like 30 seconds that can be used 1 time a day (i never use it when i play nords it's not rly needed considering you have shouts)

and Highelf's start with 50 extra mana but that's useless later in the game when you max enchanting and get enchants that reduce the spell cost.

(they do take more magic damage tho so i never play as one)

I Guess In A Way Argonians Have The Most Abilities But Since White People Are Racist Towards Everyone In This Game Its Either Imperials Or Nords

No one here has answered your question and let me just say the looks of my charecter has made me restart skyrim over 50 times and that isn't a joke. Orcs are always bad *** and do so much damage, but they look like they got hit by multiple semi trucks . Nords are family men. They get drunk and beat their children. The first male preset is a sexy man. Red guards are very honorable. If your going on lore, red guards are amazing because they were the only province to drive out the alter threat in the Great War. So they take pride in themselves. High elves are bad asses, but there faces are weird. Dark elves are amazing, but the concaving of the cheeks makes me restart. Wood elves are midgets. And stupid. But they run fast, and are noted to be nature loving hippies. Argonians and kajjits are the most badass looking, but I play in 3rd person, and the tail literally made me quit my charecter after five minutes. I hope this was helpful.

To be honest, once leveled up they are all more or less the same. Starting stat bonuses are OK, but can easily balanced by enchantments. From a narrative point of view it make almost no difference. A few little comments here and there, but nothing to get to excited about.

But in my opinion here is my opinion on each race:

    Nord:

Perhaps the one race that actually belongs in Skyrim and has a personal stake in what happens in the game (in theory.) The Frost resistance is OK, but not essential. Battle cry only really works against low level enemies and is almost never useful. Pointless once above lvl 20

    Imperial:

Imperial luck does net you little more gold while scavenging, but not much. Later in the game the amounts do get a bit bigger but by that point, money really shouldn't be an issue any more anyway. Voice of the emperor is a little useful if you "accidentally" piss off someone. But this is mostly poitless if you are playing carefully.

    Khajiit:

Night Eye is really useful when exploring caves. Plus the unarmed combat bonus is handy for bar brawls. Perhaps the only race with an ability that is always useful, but not crucial. Vampire Sight is a good alternative that does exactly the same thing. Ideal race for stealth/assassin builds.

    Orcs & Redguards:

Both more or less very similar in principle. Both are great choices for pure fighter builds. Abilities are useful, but very limited with the once a day restriction. With that in mind perhaps the Redguard is slightly better because of it's poison resistance.

    Breton:

Dragonskin is extremely useful whenever you get ambushed by a strong force. Again, a bit of a shame about its once a day restriction, otherwise it could also be useful offensively. BUT, Alteration spells are a good alternative, without those use limits. What make the Breton really stand out is its natural defence against magic. Perfect for ranged fighters like archers or mages.

    Altemer:

In theory they should be the best race for a mage buld, problem is offensive spells are rediculously under powered for high level characters. If you want to be a mage, DO NOT over level yourself.

    Dunmer:

Similar to the Nord except it is resistant to Fire. Perfect race if you wish to become a Vampire. Fire resistance is especially useful against dragons as most of them are fire breathing (aside for the Frost Dragon obviously.)

    Argonian:

In theory you would think that Waterbreathing would be a fantastic ability. Problem is, there is very little need to go anywhere underwater. The few times you do, there are potions and enchantments to enable this for the time that you need it. Histskin is a little useful when low on health potions and stuck in battle. But healing items are EVERYWHERE. So mostly pointless.

    Bosmer:

.......... I can not think of a single good thing to say about them. Utterly unremarkable. Control animal is really pointless.

To wrap up, like I mentioned in the beginning, your choice of race is mostly aesthetic. If I had to break it down I would say the best races in Skyrim are Khajiit, Breton, Nord & Dunmer. Being the only ones with semi useful skills. As to the Skill tree bonuses, these are meaningless as it takes only a few minutes to level most skills to level 15.

Bottom line: Make someone who you think looks cool.
