If you just wan to talk to people, get the headset, but make sure it's the 2.0 version. For the originals are less impressive.

If you want true immersive gameplay, get the headsets, I bought the Pulse Elites and they're amazing.

First thing to understand - the 7.1 Surround Sound feature is misleading, and strictly a marketing ploy. While a headset might be able to process 7.1 Surround Sound, the PS3's audio output can only process 5.1 Surround. Having said that, 5.1 Dolby Surround is plenty of a$$-kicking audio for most games. We don't know enough about the PS4's audio specs yet, so speculating at this point is worthless. But it'll be nice to have a 7.1 headset if the PS4 ships with 7.1 capability.

As far as just a plain Bluetooth headset, you're better off just playing without one unless you can play with your TV volume down far enough. There is nothing that makes me (and a lot of players) automatically mute someone faster than a player with a BT headset that has their TV volume cranked up. It's nothing short of plain irritating on a massive level. Since the whole purpose of a BT headset is to use the mike for communication with other players, it defeats the purpose if you're constantly being muted. It's enough of a PITA that I actually mute friends when they use one as backup when their regular headsets go down or are being recharged.

There are also many advantages to having a full stereo/surround headset. Aside from not alienating other players, you get audio cues from the game (particularly in FPS's and other shooters) that'll give you an edge in online multiplayer gaming. Hearing some dweeb trying to sneak up on you for a knife kill will get a "WTF??" from that same dweeb when you turn around and frag his a$$ before he gets the chance. Black Ops II is great for that, since there's a 1-2 second kill audio from the dude you just fragged, so you can hear their reaction, e.g., "How the shyte did he know I was there??"

You'll also hear the game the way it was meant to be heard; you'll hear things you never knew were there in games you've already played, and you'll get an edge in new games.

The Sony PS3 full stereo headset isn't bad, but my battery tanked less than 6 months after I got it, so if you go with it, get an extended warranty. It's also virtual surround sound, not Dolby, so it's fake surround anyway and doesn't give you near the audio quality as a headset with a Dolby Surround processor in it.

It's not bad if you're looking for a decent wireless headset for under $100, but if you can afford a better quality unit, get a set of Turtle Beach PX-5's, 51's, or one of the Ear Force Tango's. I've got an EFT, having finally broken my TB DPX-21's to the point where the masking tape holding it together was getting ridiculous. They still work though, but the EFT's are unbelievable.

The price is "unbelievable" also ($250-$300, depending on where you get it), but in this case, I got it on sale, with a gift card and warranty. Turtle Beach got it right with this one though; like the PX-5's outstanding construction, comfortable fit over many hours of straight gaming, programmable sound, etc.
