Can a DSL modem be hooked up to any phone line/jack?
We have a DSL modem hooked up to a phone line in the basement that doesn't reach all areas of the house. I want to put it on the main floor, but am curious if I need the phone company to do some kind of work to use the modem on the main floor or if I can just plug it into any phone line.

YES.

Just move the DSL modem [and any splitters [necessary if you still have dial-up telephones]] to the main floor jack.
- IF you lose Internet Service after the move, THEN move all back to the original phone jack.
- - IF Internet Service returns, THEN you need to call the phone company.

You should have a good connection (preferably direct) between your DSL modem and your incoming telephone lines (Demarc Box). This connection should have no filters installed on it. All other active telephones and devices that use phone lines such as FAX machines satellite boxes, etc. should have DSL filters installed on them.
What that means is, you can plug the DSL modem into any unfiltered jack.
If wireless coverage is your problem, you have other options, there are devices such as wireless extenders that can expand your wireless range if need be. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=searc...
The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats them to extend the signal range to greater distances. The connection is wireless, there are no cables between the router and the extender.
Good Luck...

You can plug it in to any phone jack in your house - just be sure you plug it straight into the wall and not through one of the little filtering dongles that are attached to your phones.
