What is the MLP Gak meme?

"Gak is a Nickelodeon putty toy, a compound of variable colors, that has been sold and distributed from 1992 to the present day. It became notable online amongst the brony fandom when commercials for the product aired during the third season premiere of the popular animated series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Production of the Gak product by Mattel® had ceased several times, but had made a comeback in 2002 and later from 2004-2010. In 2012, the Gak product was re-introduced with licensing by Nickelodeon® as “Gak is Back” in commercials that were frequently played on several children’s networks. For some odd reason, in some instances the commercials would be shown four times in a row, showcasing the Gak itself and various other accessories. One of the first known occurrences that the Brony community had with the repetitive Gak ads was on October 20th, 2012 during a livestream of a rerun of the My Little Pony episode “Winter Wrap Up” on the stream site Bronystate. The site’s chat room, which was only made up of a few regular posters, quickly took notice of the repetitive ads and started poking fun at them. However, the Gak conversations were only brief, and the subject was soon dropped thereafter."

Gak is sort of a Sillier Putty, once produced by Mattel, now distributed under the auspices of Nickelodeon. For some inscrutable reason, there were several Gak ads in the MLP:FiM third-season premiere, and folks watching live, or picking up the livestreams, got to endure them. Inevitably, it became necessary to mock Gak.
