Why are our politicians obsessed with limited persons for the post of President of India?
Why can't they think of a person like Mr. Soli Sorabjee? He belongs to the minority Parsee community. You can read about his career in the following link:

I think India needs to abolish the post of president and governors as they are nothing more than symbolic posts and the job is basically limited to maintaining the protocols. A country like India needs the least number of such posts and offices.We need efficiency, administration and governance with the least number of courtesies and pleasantries

That is because the ruling party politicians think they have to reward a person from their own party (incidentally hoping to get the full support of his for whatever they do), at the near end of his political career in the same party, and the opposition would want to oppose the candidate proposed by the ruling party, by suggesting the names of some other persons, mostly on the pretext of minority community/religion and so on just to embarrass the ruling party in opposing such a person's candidature.
Soli Sorabjee is certainly a deserving person, but see, even a person, as elite and informed as you are, is also sighting the first qualification as belonging to a minority community, rather than his many qualifications and achievements!

I don't think Indian politicians are worried about India at all. They are worried about their well being and luxuries! Further they are worried about only one family! I won't be surprised if Soniya Gandhi as a president adminsters an oath to Rahul Gandhi as a PM of India, in few months to come. What a pity!
The Congress party is nothing but a bundle of people who can't [or don't want to] think anything beyond This Gandhi family. So we as common man have to zip our lips and helplessly watch these and Indian money going into Swiss banks.
If a congressman will suggest any other name for the apex post they will lose all they have gained so far.
Simple! Selfishness is the motto!

Even though parties don't gain anything from Presidential elections, but still they might be considering these 5 qualities:
1.Popularity
2.Experience
3.Knowledge
4.Sincerity
5.Punctuality
