The i7 2630 QM is without a doubt the victor over the i5 sandy bridge one.

BTW are you choosing between a HP laptop? Because I'm in the same situation too :D.

The Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM Processor (2.0 GHz) would be best out of the 2 mentioned.

Look it up on Google for specs. Make sure it's a quad core, not dual core.

Here is a good guide for buying a laptop, covers everything. I made it myself.

It is not the brand that matters on a laptop, it's what's inside.

While Macbook has a safer operating system and cool looks, it is way overpriced and has less performant hardware in it for the money.

You have the need to run Windows software and maybe even some games, so a Windows PC laptop is recommended.

Here is what to look for when buying a laptop:

At least an Intel i3 dual core processor (i5 quad core or i7 quad core is better, but cost more). DO NOT get an AMD or Pentium Duo processor. For gaming you want an i7 quad core.

Make sure it has dedicated graphics (card) not integrated (onboard), and at least 512MB GPU (1GB or 1.5GB is better, but more expensive). For gaming you want at least 1GB graphics.

At least 4GB of DDR3 RAM (8GB is best, but more expensive)

While SSD hard drives are best and fastest, they are way too expensive and small in size (64GB to 256GB), thus not recommended for a laptop, where you only have a single hard drive installed.

Get a classic spin hard drive, at least 320GB in size at 7200rpm (a 500GB or even 1TB is better, but more expensive). Seagate hard drives are the best, the WD Caviar are also OK.

At least an 8-cell battery (a 10-cell is better, but more expensive)

A webcam and microphone on top of the screen (most laptops have them nowadays)

Windows 7 Home Premium. DO NOT get Windows 7 Starter edition or Home basic.

While USB 3.0 is best, the USB 2.0 is still OK. Get at least 4 USB ports.

IEEE 1394 (firewire) for DV or photo cam connection.

eSATA is not bad to have, but also not mandatory.

Of course you want WiFi (wireless) and ethernet connection.

At least a DVD/CD writer drive. A BD (Blue Ray drive) is more expensive and not necessary.

You might wanna print this and give to the computer tech in store when you go shopping for a laptop.

    Good luck.

If you're customizing your HP laptop, which I assume you are, the Intel Core i7 is far superior than the i5 since it has 4 cores compared to the i5's 2 cores (more cores = more tasks being done). The speed, Ghz, is only the outside, while it's different in the inside. Even though the i5 seems like it has a faster processing speed, the i7 is far superior in it's multi-tasking abilities, especially with it's turbo-boost feature boosting it to 2.9 ghz. If you are a regular use, I recommend getting the i5 rather than the i7. If you are a hard-core pc user, then get the i7.

If you are getting an HP Laptop, I highly recommend the dv6 series, since I just go an HP dv6t quad edition laptop, which is <$1000. Good luck with your laptop buying

the 1st one looks better, but if the i5 has one core and the i7 has 2 cores or vice-versa pick the one with the most cores, if both single pick which ever can boost the the highest GHz

if you just use it for light computer usage like internet, a light game like minecraft or sims and do some excel spreadsheets then grab the i5.

if you whip out new games at max graphics , render video and winrar like a mofro while doing tons of other CPU intensive tasks, the grab the i7.
