Is Sigma APO DG 70-300mm a good lens ?

I have Canon 1000D, I am looking for a telephoto lens. Since Sigma APO DG has both telephoto and Macro hence thinking of this lens. Is this a good lens ? Are there any other good lenses in this range ?

It's ok in terms of image quality, but as an unstabilized long zoom with a poor maximum aperture it will be of very limited use without a tripod in other conditions than bright sunlight.

I think you'll be much better off with the Canon 55-250mm IS. It's stabilized and hence much more useful hand-held, provides nearly as long reach but is wider at the wide end and hence more versatile.

The advertised macro ability is not true macro by a long stretch. The sigma has a pretty good reproduction ratio of 1:2, but that's still far from real macro. Also, you absolutely need a tripod to do this.

The Canon lens is even less macro capable though.
