You CAN do it, that is, it is possible. And I know pilots who sometimes do this and leave their helicopter while it is idling on the ground. I do not do this nor do I recommend it, however. It may seem like there is little risk, but if something goes wrong like an unexpected gust of wind or a malfunction of the frictions, there will be no one there to stop the helicopter. At best this would result in a damaged or destroyed helicopter, at worst it may injure or kill bystanders. It's just not worth the risk for a little convenience. Don't do it.

    technically,yes.

    legally no.

it's even questionable to start up the helicopter with incomplete crew, according to some regulations (that require the complete crew aware of the startup onboard at the time of startup blahblah)

there is no reason for a pilot to leave the helicopter when it's running. really, send the crew chief, or copilot, or let the customer bring the parcel.

"engines running, rotors turning" counts towards the runup time. so there is no reason to do so unless you are limited by startup cycles of engine.

Source(s): btw.. it is NOT antifriction, it is A friction system. finally, there was an accident where a pilot of GA airplane needed to turn the prop of his plane to clear thepistons of excess fuel after whatever he did. well, he stepped out of the airplane, spinned the prop... and the aiplane with magnetos on, and power setup more than idle kicked ON, and taxied hapilly into the trench at the end of the airfield. one more reason for chokes, and assistance at startup. when A friction system went antifriction, one helicopter of my unit drooped from two meters in a hover because the failed release collective friction switch let the collective drop on floor. that's why you should never remove hands from controls in the hover. the left seat pilot at controls was closing his window...

On my very first helicopter ride (my first flight ever) when I was 7 years old, the pilot landed the helicopter, said to me 'make sure those gauges stay okay' and left for a few minutes.

Looking back I can only think 'wow!'

I think he was a private pilot selling rides as a chisel charter to build up his hours.

We're taught to never even leave the keys in the plane without somebody there, so why the heII would it be ok to leave an aircraft unattended (leaving the aircraft) while it's still running. Yes it's possible, but it's definitely not smart.

Only in a simulator. You've stumbled on the reason children and YA Garu's should never be allowed in a real cockpit.

Sure, been done before. And the chopper has flipped over and beat itself to death, guess who the insurance company goes after...
