Wich Processor is better for gaming?

I am getting a new processor for mostly gaming and some multimedia purposes and my choices are a Intel core 2 duo e8500 or a intel i3 530.

So which one is better and why?

Get Intel Core i3 530 Dual Core or AMD Athlon II X4 630 Quad Core, depending on your affordability. Core2Duo is simply out of question as its a dual core processor with only two threads. But Core i3 is a dual core with 4 threads which makes it somewhat nearer to a quad core. And also Core i3 has got more cache memory which is beneficial is several applications.

For affordability I recommend the Athlon II X4 630 as its a quad core processor with 4 threads, and its cheaper than Core i3. The performance in games is similar to Core i3, but when overclocked it give results equivalent to quad core Core i5. It runs cooler at only 45C under overclock. Having 4 cores is beneficial for the future as more and more multi threaded applications are getting released, and in future if games take advantage of more cores, then Quad core processors would be the best bet.

  • For the gaming you will probably be good either way; most games are limited by the graphics card anyway. I would recommend the i3 530 simply because that processor uses are more recent socket, which would allow you to upgrade to a better processor some time down the road if you need more power and feel like an upgrade. The i3 is also a little bit faster of a processor in a head-to-head race. In addition, the i3 will allow you to use a more modern chip set on the motherboard, which will give you access to faster memory (DDR3 vs DDR2) and the like. The downside to all of this is that even if the processors cost similar amounts, the other components will be more expensive for the i3. You would be OK with either processor, but my vote would be for the i3.

I'd say e8500 is the better one:

    1) You get good performance

    2) Good overclocking potential

    3) Is a good competitor for a quad core cpu so imagine what a beast it is!

    4) runs pretty cool

    5) Gaming always requires a cool cpu coupled with a good GPU and a fast HDD.

Now basically core i3 is not for gaming it is just for people with basic multimedia needs like watching a movie and playing simple cpu centric flash games. If you want a gaming cpu it would start from core i5 or better recommended core i7. But these come at high prices :( .

I know e8500 also comes pricier than core i3, but it better serves your gaming needs.

oh yeah i hope i don't need to remind you to look for a good GPU too.

Any ways, that's my recommendation. Hope it helps.
