how to reduce bandwidth usage while talking on skype ?

can we control the amount of bandwidth used while chatting or talking to other people with skype or gtalk or ymessenger... and how to do it ? I am using Ubuntu 9.10, ubuntu 10.04 and windows XP SP3 and W7 on x86 machine.

Update:

Bandwidth used is about 20 Mb in 30-40 Mins while talking only ? we need to do something, after all voice takes about 24 kbps....

    Well using the video functionality of skype will definitely add to your usage, so avoid that if you are going over your usage limit. Unfortunately there's no way to reduce the quality of the sound, which is the only way that you could reduce the amount of information being sent/received from your modem (which is what constitutes usage).

    Check out an open source alternative to skype and see what audio codecs they use. To be honest I don't think you can do much else (realistically) other than reduce the amount of time spent talking and try to avoid video.

    There is no such thing in reducing bandwidth usage while using skype, gtalk or ymessenger.

    All these use standard settings and they are optimized for using very low bandwidth...

    you can try one thing. go to windows task manager. then in processes. right click image (skype) name and set priority to low. this may help in reducing bandwidth .
