Budget end gaming card best value is Radeon 3850 100 quid roughly from Aria or Microdirect (beats X1950 (dx9) 8600gt and 8800 Gt 256 (dx10) (source Toms Hardware) and also available unlike 8800Gt 256! If your running XP all the cards I've mentioned will give you reasonable frame-rates up to about 1280x 1024. If you are running Vistas or higher resolutions than 1280 you should consider spending a bit more! The Radeon 3870 is good value at around £150 and like the 3850 supports Dx 10.1 (due with Vista service pack 1) but is about 15% slower than the 8800 Gt 512 but it is 15-20% cheaper ( a price war is a possibility) One thing a lot of people overlook (and it can prove costly) is that modern gaming cards are: a. power hungry and b. produce a lot of heat. Make sure your power supply is up to the job If it wont supply about 30 Amps or more at 12v you may need to replace it. Dont just go by the Wattage rating on the box I've seen "500w" power supplies rated at 14A at 12v, a good one from Hiper, OCZ , Antec etc will be rated more like 2x 20A at 12v and will actually provide 36A or more at 12v under full load. Make sure you have got good airflow in the case. Hope this doesn't put you off the idea!
