It can be bad, depends on where you get them though really. If you get a tattoo in a place that goes over bones, those usually hurt worse than a place like on your thigh for example.

I have a tattoo on my foot and I hear it is the most painful place to get a tattoo besides the genital region and rib cage (or sides).
Though each person has a different pain tolerance, I have a usually high pain tolerance. Believe me, it hurts. Don't let anyone tell you any different. Keep in mind that no matter where you get your tattoo there will always be a sting and it will bring a lot of discomfort. The worst part is actually getting it on. Afterward it's all about keeping it clean and taking care of it using a tattoo-safe cream application.
Although I only have one tattoo on the top of my left foot, I know many others with tattoos all over their bodies.
I hear that back is the least painful as well as the top fleshy part of the arm where there is less nerves (since it is mostly skin and muscle)
The most excruciating experiences I have heard of are the bottoms of the wrists, fingers, feet, ankles, and sides.
Also make sure you have a great tattoo artist that you get along with. Having an artist that you feel awkward talking to, or are unsure about their skill level, do not be afraid to say "I'm sorry, can you recommend me to other artists? I want to view my options."

Tattoos hurt A LOT! Some people like the pain, some people can't stand it and run out with a half finished tattoo. Whatever you do, don't get a tattoo drunk. It thins the blood and can make it bleed more which can sometimes make the colors run a little. Anything that dulls the pain can do that. Think about the tattoo more before you get it.

The answer is yes. When needles pierce in your skin does hurt. But what you really want to know is, How MUCH does it hurt, and can I handle it? it is not nearly as bad as what you might imagine. One feel pain when the cluster of needles on the tattooing machine piercing skin very rapidly. This sensation, however, doesnt feel like the poking pain of an injection rather its more of a constant vibration. You will be amazed at how quickly your body releases endorphins, (pain killers), which provide relief from the pain significantly.
The pain will also vary according to which part of your body worked on. Areas with skin right above bones (collarbone, anklebone, etc.) tends to be more painful than other areas.
