The snow season is officially from June to October.

The best time to go all depends on the season. Although the skiing season begins in June sometimes it best to wait until later in the season. If it's a good season it's best to wait until August and sometimes early September. I've been to Falls Creek about 20 times and I've experienced the best conditions and snow in early September. By September there are less blizzards, if the season has been good, a lot of snow and generally nice sunny days. However if there isn't much snow and further snowfall isn't predicted it's best to go in mid or late July so your guaranteed some snow.

I hope your friend has fun!

Ski season runs from the end of June to September; but conditions are usually not the best early or late in the season.

It is quite a drive from Melbourne to Falls Creek, about 350km if you go through Mount Beauty (at the bottom of the mountain). However; there is a brand new road from Omeo to Falls Creek; just finished. This makesw a short cut from Melbourne; but it is still over 250km. It also provides an alternative connection to Mt Hotham, but still a bit of a drive.

Of course, the area is very beautiful in summer, too; and a lot easier to get around. There is more accommodation available; and at off-season rates (but the lodges and chalets at the ski resorts close down after the end of the ski season). There is plenty of accommodation elsewhere (Omeo, Mt Beauty, Bright).

In fact; I;ve never been to either Falls Creek or Mt Hotham in winter; but have been there several times during the summer (the area has some of the best motorcycling roads in the country)
