Has NASA ever received a message from another planet?

One of my science students has heard rumors that NASA has received a message from what might be another civilization.

    Hi,

Other than the obvious ones from Mars, the answer's probably no. The SETI Institute has been searching the skies for mesages and signals for many years and only received several anomalies that are unusual. This doesn't mean that they are messages...just unexplained.

The most recent that I remember was a few years ago and in the link below. It's New Scientist and reputable.

'Rumours' and 'might' in the same sentence are usually a good indicator that nothing has happened.

Back in 1977, the SETI thought they were getting a radio signal from another planet. The signal was so easily detected, it was definitely a radio signal. But by the time they could get better detail with other instruments, the signal had stopped. It remains a mystery. My guess though is that it was from 1 of the 2 Voyager probes that were launched that year to explore all of the gas planets including Uranus and Neptune. There has not been another signal detected ever since. The question about that theory of mine is if it really was from 1 of the Voyager probes, why did the signal stop and why didn't it ever come back. We still get signals from the Voyager probes to this day, but since we're focusing on the signal, we don't get it confused with any signal that ever comes from another planet. But SETI was looking everywhere. So I think they couldn't tell if it was a signal from something man made. And if it was from a Voyager probe, I can't explain why they didn't pick up signals from any of the thousands of satellites orbiting the Earth. It would almost be like a man searching for light from any star in space and not even noticing the light from the Sun in the daytime.

from the way you worded it, the answer is yes, but the answer to the intent of your question is no.

NASA has in fact received many messages from other planets, but they have been sent from equipment that NASA sent there. The mars rover has sent a lot of messages from mars.

But there has been no proof of intelegent life outside our planet, especially not from another civilization, and if there was any credible source (for example, NASA) that mentions otherwise, it would be all over the news and the internet and everywhere.

No. We have not yet gotten any indications there are other civilizations beyond Earth.

    ...just a rumor

    Yes.

The Mars rover sent many messages from Mars to Earth. There have been probes sent to other planets also with messages from them being sent to Earth.

Well do there own mars rovers count because they are sending pictutres of mars to earth. But if you mean not from us then No.

You are a teacher!? goodness gracious me.

NASA gets lots of messages from civilisation from other planet. The civilisation is ours, the messages are from our space craft we sent to those planets.

How would your student hear this rumor, if it had any truth to it? Does your student have some high level security clearance? If not, who cares what rumors he heard?

No but Congressman Barney Frank wants NASA to probe Uranus.

No but SETI will pretend to find one soon just in time for 2012.
