What is Free Public Wifi?

I needed to pick up my emails and suchlike while I was in London for a few days last week, so I scouted around looking for free wifi (cafes or FON shared accesses, not "stealing"). One SSID I kept coming across was FreePublicWifi. It shows up as a point to point network. With a name like that, you'd think that the computer would connect to it. Anyone know what it is?

Update:

The point is, it's not an access point, but peer-to peer. I tried Macdo (and bought a coffee) but only got Cloud service, which you have to pay for.

I'm afraid it means having to cross the threshold of your nearest McDonalds however, grit your teeth and bear it as they offer free WiFi. I guess you could buy a coffee to be polite.

Free public wifi is wifi that is not privite connection (eg. home broadband). It sounds like that hotspot is a public one set up by communication companies.
