Schizophrenia is a biological brain disease that requires medication. It's not a minor reaction to stress that simple counseling can help although people with this illness can benefit from counseling and psychotherapy in addition to meds. You wouldn't do only counseling for strep throat or diabetes.

You are not schizophrenic. Schizophrenia means you have auditory or visual hallucinations (hearing voices or seeing things that aren't there), and paranoia, meaning you feel like everybody is out to get you or that there's a conspiracy going on against you. What your describing is classic, unipolar depression. You've been through some tough things in your life and it's getting you down. However, what you said at the end, "I'm over it, I don't want this past to haunt me forever since I have huge dreams and goals for the future that I want to succeed in", shows that you're a healthy, well developed individual and the abuse and depression doesn't own your mind. You're not in as bad of shape as you think. All the troubles in your past are, well, in the past and you're ready to move on now. I wish you luck!

Psychotherapy is used to control and manage Schizophrenia. Full recovery may occur but should not be expected, as most people with schizophrenia continue to suffer with some symptoms throughout their lives.

However, some people do just get better on their own.

No. Both have to go hand in hand. There is a centre in Nallasopara, near Mumbai specially meant for treating these patients.

meds are currently a must. sorry champ. If you are symptom free for an entire year, then you can talk to your psychiatrist about weaning you off, but generally there is a relapse. right now all there is is meds.
