Why do people keep posting unrelated comments in the Peking Boulevard category?

    Favourite answer:

I know, right? I think this section is full of trolls who keep making comments about other airplanes and matters that are clearly unrelated to the Peking Boulevard. I wish they would just go away. I am reporting every single one of their irrelevant responses.

What do you think about United Airlines initiative to hire pilots based on race and gender?

Lets just argue the pilots will be as skilled as white males, is it right to deny a white male a job based on his skin color and gender?

why do many people fear travelling by air but not keeping of big dogs?

yearly over 50,000 people die from dog-related attacks whereas only less than 500 people die from plane crash annually, that's a huge difference...

I for example just got chased and nearly killed by angry dogs earlier when I was riding a bike

    Does anyone recognise this airline?

I’m sorry it’s really obscure, but if it helps, this photo was taken in Indonesia (but it may not be an Indonesian plane). Does anyone recognise the airline, or might it be a private jet?

Why are helicopters more expensive than fixed wing planes?

    Favourite answer:

They are much more mechanically complicated, cost far more to design, test and get certified, and all but the cheapest Robinson now tend to be jet-powered. They also tend to use more expensive varieties of alloys and composites in their construction.

AIRCRAFT SECTION - 1950s Luscombe that you have put 17.5 hours on in the past 10 years? Should you let the mechanic change your oil?

    Favourite answer:

Aside from what others  have  said (oil should be  changed annually regardless of hours flown), changing  the oil, cleaning the screens, and looking at the condition of the drained oil is part of an annual inspection.

But the engine in a plane that has flown 17.5 hours in 10 years is probably  toast, anyway.

Can any jet perform a vertical take off and transition from hovering to forward flight ?

    Favourite answer:

All Harrier variants could do that. So could the Yakovlev 141 but only 4 were ever built.

A number of of VTOL jets have also been built in the past but not in any meaningfully true production capacity.

The F35B/Lightning II cannot usefully perform true vertical take-off. In demonstrations where it carries no armaments and barely any fuel and has been stripped right down to basics it can do it, but in genuine service it’s a short take-off model using vectored thrust and wing lift, and can then hover and land vertically. Vertical landing has to be with very low fuel loads, requiring fuel-dumping before landing if necessary. Otherwise it’s really a short-landing aeroplane which again needs wing lift to help it to land. So it’s really a STOVL (Short Take-Off, Vertical Landing) and not a true VSTOL jet.

VTOL is not that important these days, but during the Cold War the ability of the Harrier to land and take off vertically from wooded forest clearings requiring no airstrip and not even a short length of road was of critical strategic importance.

The F35B/Lightning II almost never happened. It was just far too heavy during development and still remains a heavy machine. The Harrier/AV-8 has the massive advantage that a single engine provides all of the lift for VTOL operation and normal forward flight. Every other hovering jet design including the YAK-141 depends on having jet engines devoted solely to vertical operation which then become parasitic dead-weight in normal flight.

To improve range all Harrier/AV8 variants were usually used in STOVL mode, despite all being fully VSTOL capable.

The above answer ignores the huge number of jet-powered helicopters, and the jet turbine powered V-22 Osprey.

What were airports like before 9/11?

    Favourite answer:

You could walk from the check in area to the gate without a ticket just to watch the planes take off. My dad was a mechanic for United, and we would walk past the check in, take the corridor to the left, and walk into an unlocked door, go down a corridor through another unlocked door, and walk right out onto the tarmac and take the stairs up the loading ramp to get right on the plane.

My dad got the boarding pass ahead of time, and we would show up fifteen minutes before departure.

I dreamt I was on a plane - I DON'T, as I'm afraid of flying - and was finding toys up the aisle ; and became pally with the friendly pilot?

I picked up one toy in a see-through, plastic case. It was half car, half van. But a young boy seen me ; and he said the toy was his. It was like an escalator belt of things ; and there were other things/toys. I asked if I could take some ; and I was allowed to. I seen a model motorbike. Then I seen an actual-size motorbike

The plane then began to move on its wheels. I went to the cockpit and told the pilot I WASN'T flying ; just visiting. I also remarked that no one had said the plane was leaving. I was also thinking to myself : I could have free toys/objects AND a free flight The pilot had to reverse on the plane's wheels to where the plane'd originally beenI was just behind the pilot ; and he seen the object lump in my left pocket. I didn't want to show the toy/object I'd taken ; but the pilot insisted. It was a roll of raffle tickets, which I'd also taken ; but the main toy/object remained hidden behind them and still in my pocket  I left the plane ; and the blond-haired pilot had his friendly head out the cockpit's right door/window. He was saying he'd see me soon, when he would return to the airport. I was also thinking I'd made a friend                                                                                        Then the scene became my local bus station ; and the pilot's head was sticking out the bus door/window...

If Airplanes never existed would the Corona Virus be in the USA?

    Favourite answer:

Boats, rafts, swimming, transporter(Star Trek), star gate (SG1) and by hydrogen filled dirgibles,(because we get mail from Overseas it will get here.  Also, the wind.(possibility that could happen)coming from Europe (Columbus got here in 1492), we would have more ships in the water. How do you think the U.S. got involved in 2 world wars?  They came by boat and brought the Flu to Spain (where it was first identified)

100 years ago, then military men getting LEAVE time off to visit back HOME in the U.S. took that confined to military camp to the general population of the U.S. killing off a swack load of U.S. citizens.  Google Spanish Flu. and be amazed you have done this once already.

How does a flight attendant reach to the captain on an Airbus?

Do they climb the spiral Boeing stairs? Or stand on an elevator? If so, which room gets them there? The middle of a seating area? The place where flight attendant delivers your welcome or the middle where flight attendants go to lunch? And when they're upstairs on the second floor, where are they more likely to stand in? The same room?

In your opinion, if someone had Asperger, but functional enough that you wouldn't see it, would be wrong not telling it to aviation doctor ?

    Favourite answer:

The ramifications of not disclosing this is far greater then those of disclosing it!

No, I would not tell a lie like that just to make it easy to get a pilots license. One of the qualities a pilot needs is a concern for the general public and passengers. A failure to disclose shows the person lacks those concerns.

Better to be declared competent enough with Asperger's then to hide it and loose the license because of a failure to disclose. If the person in question is competent enough but fails to disclose and is found out, the license will be voided with little to no hope of ever getting another one.

What's the practicality of landing on a deserted island to save someone?

With a plane or ship, I'm sure there are things like not having a runway or FAA permission would make it impossible to land at will if you saw a castaway.
