Do any high schools teach public speaking?

    Favourite answer:

Absolutely.  In Texas it is also a state competitive  academic category.  They teach it school, students compete at the school district level, then between districts, followed by regions, and finally at state competitions.

Can a child be held back because their old school won't provide proof they completed a grade?

My niece is now in my custody. Prior to moving in with me she went to school in Iowa where she was apparently issued a laptop for schoolwork. When I contacted her old school the staff mentioned this to me and said it was never returned so they couldn't give me any information until they got it back or I paid for it. I said that wasn't my problem and just went ahead to enroll her in school in Nebraska with the information I already had. Now it's almost the end of the school year and the local school is saying she might have to repeat sixth grade because there's no proof she completed fifth grade since the old school never sent records. Is this legal?

What should I do about this school situation?

My daughter is graduating from high school.  She took a multiple choice test in one of her classes.  After she got her grade we were reviewing the test and found one of the questions had NO correct answer.  If that question were not in the test, her grade for the course would be high enough that she may have qualified for a college scholarship.

We went to the school to ask that she get a new grade on the test after throwing out the question that did not have a correct answer.  Both the teacher and the principal refused.  They told us that once a grade is recorded, it can not be changed for ANY reason.   We are considering our options.   We are talking about the possibly of a LOT OF SCHOLARSHIP MONEY riding on the outcome of this. Here are some of the things we are thinking about.

Post the whole story on YOUTUBE and hope it will go viral and change the schools mind about changing the grade.

    OR

Contacting the local newspaper and TV stations to see if they will give this some publicity.

    OR

Contacting other parents whose children may have been victims of the same test.

    OR

    Suing the school board.

Any advice on how to proceed will be greatly appreciated

    Altercation at school ?

I was informed last week that my daughter was involved in a incident where a boy pushed her to the ground and kicked her. The incident was over a toy. My daughter is 9 and in elementary school. The school informed me when it happened and explained my daughter was taken to the nurse. The other child isn’t getting a suspension. Is it wrong that I don’t believe this was handled correctly? I don’t want my daughter to think it’s okay for someone to put their hands on her. It doesn’t help this kid is in her class as well. Any advice from other parents? TY

How do I get through my high school graduation ceremony?

At least 100 students will graduate. I'm rank #5 so my name will be called very early on. This means I have to sit there and listen to at least 95 names being called, one by one. Boring and I can't use my phone. I also have to listen to the principal's speech, the salutatorian's, and the valedictorian's. Plus, there's a picture slideshow to commemorate the school year. It'll take forever.

Why do I have to see a grief counselor?

I'm a freshman in high school. A senior that goes to my school died last week, and now the school is making it mandatory for all of the students to see a grief counselor. I've never met the person that died in my life, have no idea who they were, and when I saw a picture of him, I didn't even recognize him (there's over 2,000 kids in my school). I have no connection to him whatsoever. I don't understand why I have to see a counselor to "grieve" over someone that I have no reason to grieve over.

How can schools improve their intruder protocol?

    Favourite answer:

My children’s  schools never had a schedule on the outside door of the classroom. I have never seen a schedule of when the room is in use posted in any school.

The classroom door needs to be able to be locked from the inside. There are gadgets for classroom doors the teacher can easily slip in the door handle then the intruder can not open the door.

A dark quite classroom is hopefully over looked and passed by.

Our high school has doors that can be closed to block entrance to hallways. This can prevent an intruder (or fire) from going into another section of the school.  These doors are locked when there are inside sport games or plays or concerts going on. Student and guests can come in but only have access to part of the school.

In our whole school district school  doors leading outside are locked. Anyone can get out, but no one can get in.  Guests must enter through the front entrance after school starts. A office staff member needs to buzz them in.  Our HS and middle school have two sets of doors at the main entrance. Once buzzed in a guest can only get into the main office. The other set of doors are locked.

Some schools have ID landyard that are worn by all staff and students. ANYONE without a ID hanging from their neck will be stopped.   This is done also to stop any student from another school from mixing in.

Who decides which classes in school are required ?

When I was a young boy living in Twin Oaks, a student at Twin Oaks High School was required to take Biology . My family and I moved to Green Valley when my brother was in high school and I was in seventh grade . We were living in the same state, but  Twin Oaks is in Mayfield County and Green Valley is in Granberry County . After a few months, I said "Now that we're living in Green Valley, I might not have to take Biology !" . My mom said "Yes, you do ! Now that's decided by the State Board of Education, so you have to take it no matter where you go in the state !" . My brother's friend was familiar with the classes the students at Green Valley High School were required to take, so he said "No, you don't ! You can, but you don't have to !" . NOW -- If the State Board of Education doesn't decide which classes in school are required, who does ? Who decides if the students in Mayfield County have to take Biology and the students in Granberry County don't ? Who decides which classes in school are required ?  Thank you in advance for your answers .

How to prove abuse at school with young children?

My sons in junior kindergarten, he tells me that he’s afraid of going to school because his teacher punishes the kids by locking them in the “monster closet”, he said the teacher locks them in a closet, telling them there’s monsters in it and that they’ll die if they aren’t good. Everyday is a struggle to get him to school, huge tantrums, kicking, begging, he genuinely seems terrified to go. I have gone to the school and had talked to the teacher and principal that both dismiss it as ridiculous. I’ve even asked my son in front of them what he had told me and my son remains adamant that this is regular practice but the school dismisses saying that he just doesn’t want to go to school and saying that by “playing into his lies” that I’m spoiling him. I really don’t know what to do, I am a young mother, this is my first son and I’ve never had to deal with anything like this before but I really feel like he isn’t lying, what can I do to prove this abuse?

When I picked up my kids from school I noticed a house close to the school had a CCTV camera pointing at the school gates... illegal? ?

I was collecting my kids form their primary school, the school is from ages 3-11, a house very close to the school had a cctv camera on their gate post at the front of their garden, it was pointing towards the school gates which the kids use twice a day to enter and exit the school. Should I contact police? What if it’s a nonse spying on the kids? Is this even legal to have a camera over looking a primary school?

What can my daughter and I do to prevent my Grand Child who's 5 years old from being held back in Kindergarten?

    Favourite answer:

I think you need to have your grandson evaluated for learning disabilities, as well as for both ADHD and Autism spectrum disorders before you go complaining to the school board about what the teacher wants to do. You mentioned that he has problems with distractability and with inattentiveness, which are both signs of ADHD and also of Autism spectrum disorders. Getting him glasses was a smart move, certainly. But glasses won't be much help to him if he can't learn to sit still and focus for long periods of time. The handwriting thing isn't something I'd worry too much about, because handwriting and penmanship are going to go the way of the Dodo Bird very soon. As long as your grandson can write his name and do a little bit of basic printing by hand, he'll be fine. Most of his learning from now on will be done on a computer or a tablet, and it would be much better for him to start learning how to type at his age, instead of worrying about how well he writes by hand.

Boys are 3 to 5 times more likely to be diagnosed with Autism than girls are, especially if they are of African descent. They also have much higher rates of learning problems, such as ADHD, than girls do. The reasons behind this are not well understood, and research into the causes of this trend is ongoing. These problems are best treated when they are identified early in a child's life and academic career.

What is the closest thing to going back to high school for a 40 year old. ?

I am not talking about getting a GED I graduated high school and college but I feel like I didn't glean enough out of it because maybe I didn't take it seriously enough, but I want to learn now. I feel like my brain cells are dying and I really want to stimulate my brain. Not for a job or a degree but just for fun and to feel like an educated person. But I feel like I need a framework. I would give anything if I could do an online high school thing but of course, you can't if you are my age. I can't afford a tutor, going back to college is out of the question because of finances and of course covid is making things weird.

So I am just looking for websites, advice, things that would help me focus my goals and develop a time management strategy for studying various subjects. I want to sharpen my algebra, learn to write better, explore history, maybe learn another language etc but I need some guidelines.
