  • How do i get taxed on forein trading account?

    Hi.

I live in germany and have a U.S. trading account on OptionsXpress, i transfered $25k on that account a year ago and since have been trading US stocks with it. The account dropped to $20k at some point and then back to around $26k. so around 1k above the original money i had after 1 year of trading. The only thing i really gained was good experience to get me going. If i transferred back 5k to my german account, Will it be taxed? Or how does taxation work on that? What about if i transfer the entire 26k (take note it has 1k more than 25k original). How wil they know that i gained 1k? Will they have to rely on my honesty? I assume that only 1k should be taxable, is that correct?

  • Where do i report bugs in yahoo finance quotes?

    Hi.

I've found a bug in yahoo finance. Sometimes the pre-market stock quote is wrong.

Example for ACHN today with previous close of $3.26

    3.42 0.16(4.91%) Dec 4, 4:00PM EST|

    Pre-Market : 3.55 Up 0.29 (8.90%)

Notice that the "Up 0.29" is wrong. It seems it is adding the previous Up value with the PM Up value but PM Up value should only be based off the closing value of previous day. It should be "Up $0.13" because close of 3.42 + 0.13 = 3.55 which is up 3.9% not 8.9%

Notice that other finance sites like Bloomberg.com, MorningStar.com, or MarketWatch.com all display it correctly:

    PM: $3.55 Change +0.13 +3.80%

This bug is very common on yahoo finance, where do i report this bug?

  • If a company liquidates today with market cap lesser than stockholder equity, will you profit?

Hi. so like i noticed there are some companies especially those where investors don't see any future growth for, that have a market cap lesser than the shareholder equity. What if you owned that stock and the company decided to liquidate today. Would'nt you get more from the liquidation than if you simply sold it? Let's assume a company had $2M market cap and shareholder equity or net tangibles of $10M and the company had 1M shares outstanding. That's $2 per share on the market. but if liquidated worth $10 per share. Is that theorhetically possible or in real life would never happen?

  • Why people still trade MAKO & NVE?

Although now at half the average volume, why are people still trading MAKO and NVE when the stock price will more or less stay the same for some time? it will vary by a few cents up/down but i don't think that's much of motivation to trade it. most near term expiry out-of-the-money options are also all at $0. What's the point trading?

  • Why are there no STRICT definitions for financial terms?

Hi. I wanted to make a list of some financial terms with their strict definitions. Yet i'm always stumbling on the fact that the web offers different definitions. For example, some sources say "Net Profit" is exactly the same as "Net Income", some say "Net Income" is BEFORE expenses deductions yet how can that be when "Net Income" = Gross Income - Expenses (labor, utilities, taxes, etc), that formula is clearly stating it is AFTER and not BEFORE deductions... who is right and who is wrong? There are many other terms that are confusingly differently calculated on the web. Do these definitions all depend on how the company wants to calculate and define them?

  • Will $NVE remain at around $23 until deal is complete in 2014?

Kinda got curious of how this works. So MidAmerican will purchase all of NV Energy $NVE for $23.75 in a all-cash transaction. And the deal is expected to be complete at the end of 1st quarter of 2014. I've noticed that the stock has since the announcement traded just below this offer price. Now assuming that this is 100% going to complete by 2014, will the share price stay at that level until then? Is it useless to buy it at that price as this could never go any higher? If you bought shares at the current price $23.57 and kept it until the transaction completion, will you automatically receive $23.75 per share and book that $0.18 profit?

  • How is section 16 actually 15 USC § 78p?

I'm kinda lost... I see that Securities Exchange Act of 1934 is exactly Chapter 2B of Title 15 http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/15/chapter-... as stated in section 78a (short title). How is Section 16 of the exchange act actually Section 78p? How did they come up with 16? My guess is that it used to be the sixteenth section of Chapter 2B before more and more sections got inserted??

  • Why do futures traders prefer E-mini S&P futures index?

I noticed that among the dow, nasdaq, russel, vix, and s&p and the minis, traders prefer S&P (ESM13, ESU13). I personally have been trading the DJIA mini-sized (YMM13) futures index. Is there any particular reason why more volume is traded for the S&P?

The bitcoin cap is at 21M. 11M bitcoins have already been mined. Price is $130. Now what happens if some random billionaires buys up all the bitcoins and they all decide not to sell them? There won't be any bitcoin circulation, hence it can never become a currency lol.

  • How was DDD trade on May 23, 2013 at 14:36:22 possible?

Hi. Some people including myself noticed on several brokerage sites a trade yesterday (May 23, 2013) on the 1-mintue chart of 3D Systems (DDD) that made no sense. Also listed on the times & sales of Nasdaq website. The single suspicious trade was exactly 14:36:22 exchanging 1500 shares at the price of $43 despite market price to be in the 45-46 range. see this candle-stick chart here: http://stocktwits.com/message/13751518 Anyone know what exactly happened here?

  • Can Ben Bernanke invest his money anywhere anytime?

Since Bernanke is one of the most powerful people in the world, any comments that come out of his mouth, can have a major impact on the world economy. So like i was wondering, can he just invest his money anywhere anytime? I mean like yesterday he must have definitely known that the market would sell-off bigtime after his remarks. The Dow was rallying +150 points to all-time highs of 15,550 after comments of not stopping QE then dropping into the red 15,260 after some Fed suddenly had plans to reduce the monthly $85B bond buying as early as next month; Nikkei down 7%, DAX now down 2%.... He could have just gone short ALL major indexes or any or all of the high beta stocks and made a fortune. To what extent is he allowed to invest?

  • Time & Sales determining buy or sell?

Hi, i can determine that on 14:31:15 a SELL of 2500 shares has been made because the price went from 10.41 down to 10.40. And then a subsequent BUY has been made 100 shares because it went back up to 10.41. But how do i know if the transactions is a buy or sell if they all have the same price? Like for example at 14:31:25 to :29 they are both 10.40. The first 113 shares was a sell but the next has the same price, is it safe to assume it was also a sell? i noticed that by other broker services they have background colors of red and green to determine this buy my broker at optionsxpress doesn't have that.

  • Why are NFLX ITM-puts "cheaper" than OTM?

At the moment NFLX is trading at $211. And here are the current prices of these puts:

    210 put = 6.40

    220 put = 12.80

    230 put = 19.50

Let's assume that option value = intrinsic value + IV + time value.

As you can see the OTM put strike 210 with no intrinsic value is valued at $6.40 which would be worth nothing at expiration if the price stayed at $211. So it's got only time and IV priced into it. But the 230 ITM put is priced at 19.50, with intrinsic value of 230-211=18. So it's got only $1.50 (19.50-18) time & IV priced into it. Why should i then buy the 210 put when the 230 put is relatively cheaper in terms on time and IV value?

  • Why do stocks mentioned by PennyStock go up?

Hi. I don't invest in penny stocks but i receive alerts from them (no idea why) that a certain stock will move big. Many times when i receive those alerts, the stock moves up. Is that a scam or manipulation? I have a feeling they invest in a certain penny stock ahead and then send the alert attempting to rip off other people who get the alert and invest big time in it while they sell at highs and move on to the next penny stock. For example this morning they mentioned LWCTF, and it's up 50%. I'm sure tomorrow is the sell off and lots of bagholders will be left behind.

  • Does technical Analysis apply to indexes?

Hi. just curious... but does technical analysis apply to indexes like say the dow jones or s&p500? i noticed that during regular day trading hours the dow futures (YMM13) moves in exactly the same pattern as the dow jones (DJIA). Probably traders are using arbitrage to reflect the Dow average. But after regular day market hours, when the futures continue, they move based on how traders trade using technical analysis. That's just what i noticed... but am i wrong? Now that's assuming no further BIG influencing news regarding the economy appears during after hours.

  • Why $EURUSD short squeeze on S&P500 high?

Hi. i read from someone's tweet that when the S&P500 breaks it's 2007 ultimate high, a short-squeeze would happen in the $EURUSD. And this just happened today! What's the rationale behind this?
