  • How to develop short tailed bettas?

Is there a possibility of developing short tail bettas with a male betta splendons and female crowntail or vice versa? The only short tails found around are very expensive plakats, which I dont think is worth to spend on. Moreover it would be like an achievement to make new strains. So, please help me out or provide me links to forums, portals where I can read about betta genetics and developing new colors and finnage.

    Thank you!

  • Convict, Salvini cichlids breeding!?

I guess that two of my cichlids are preparing to cross breed, convict male 4" & salvini female3", I figured this out by the following reasons; They became much tolerant towards each other, they are sharing same corner, the pot owned by convict is now being used by salvini (which was impossible for other fishes, even the larger zebra mbuna & jaguar I have is bullied by convict, making it impossible for other fishes) simultaneously, the both guard that corner, convict is always aggressive towards other tankmates, it even chases the salvini sometimes. I suspect that there might be eggs in the pot, but it being situated behind large rock, facing towards the bach makes it impossible to check it, if there are some eggs in it, I dont even want to disturb it, taking out the pot.

If they are really breeding what might be the outcome, does anyone know that? salvict or convini?.....lol

  • A question to experienced discus owners?

Is discus a really difficult fish to keep. I heard from many owners, that their maintenence is exaggerated . I have seen people keeping them without checking ph, testing water. There is a person who has 2 of the heckel's discus in green waters, high ammonia value < 60gallons at variable temperatures, being fed with dirty blackworms, along with angels, plecos, danios, I asked him, how his angels survive that conditions? He says the tank bred angels are tough can survive anything except bullies. Surprisingly he has them for over a year.

  • veges for African cichlids?

I have Malawi cichlids, I tried feeding them raw vegetables like carrot , beans , peas ,etc., but they r not able to eat that. Do I have to process those before feeding them. Now their staple diet is high quality koi pellets with a lot of spirulina. I wanted to feed them some fresh food so that their colors become more intense. So tell me what all veges should I feed them & how?

  • Sick Green Terror?

My favourite fish in the tank Green terror cichlid is ill, I bought it last november when it was about an inch, it has gone all the way to 5" now, without any problem, disease. Suddenly it has fallen sick since two days. Being the largest fish he is still the king of my tank with other cichlids. He is breathing heavily, with mouth and gills always opened wide an his stomach seems to be bulging out a bit, abnormally. He became timid, earlier he tried to scare off the people in front of the tank, banging at the tank wall, now he is hiding behind rocks for th same thing. Since two days he ate nothing. Rest of the conditions like body color, finnage, swimming , scales, etc seem to be normal. He is swimming actively in normal manner. I tried to feed it medicine soaked pellets in case for constipation, but he is not eating that. Please tell me the what happened to my fish and how should I treat him.

  • Whats the difference between midas & Red Devil?

Both cichlids have same body structures, same built, same male & female characteristics, reach to same max size, shows same coloration patterns, same water requirements, same cost, same temperment, same diet, same place of origin i.e., Central America - Nicaragua, same breeding style, etc. Infact everything is exactly same about both of them, THEN WHY THEY HAVE TWO DIFFERENT NAMES.

  • Monodactylus argenteus?

I was planning to keep these fish along with my cichlids in normal water (not brackish), is it good to keep them without salt, because I've seen so many people keeping them in neutral water successfully. My cousin also had them for 6 years in his tank with angels, arowanas and some medium sized southamerican cichlids (acaras ). The monos were the active part of his tank, they r a very unique and rare fish. If it is not proper with cichlids, then is it OK if I keep a school of them in a normal freshwater tank, because maintaining the level of salt balanced, testing the pH seems to be a confusing job.

  • Green Terror Cichlid!?

My GT(Green Terror Cichlid ) is acting strange, I have it from six months, its a male (about 4") & is very healthy. Earlier it was too shy to come out. Now it is shy (not much), a bit change in its attitude is observed. When someone watches it closely, it is flaring its gills and trying to scare the viewer charging at the aquarium wall (like it usually does with other fishes). I dont understand what it is trying to do. So I think any aquarist who has an experience in keepng GT can explain me about this behavior.
